Well it's October. The bees are doing well and have given us an unexpected bonus this year. We ended this season with a total honey harvest (Spring 18 lbs. Fall 58 lbs.) of 76 lbs. That's pretty amazing for first year hives. It wasn't anything that we did in particular, it just happened to be a very good year in our area for nectar flow. As of today (10/12/14) we still have Japanese Knotweed blooming. Of course we did what was necessary to make sure that our bees were healthy and strong. Now comes a real test as we hope that our bees will over Winter successfully. We requeened in early August with local survivor stock and are now making sure that the bees have ample food stocks. I'm hopeful.

Filling 1 lb. jars.
We only had 36 jars, but plan to use the rest of the Fall honey to try to make some creamed honey.
Dark Fall honey. It's probably mostly Japanese Knotweed as I believe Goldenrod honey is lighter and smells like old socks. There was no odor that I detected in our hives.
Here are some of the honey bees that deserve all of the credit. All photos were taken by my wife Ruth.
